North Georgia is home to a variety of spider species, ranging from harmless to potentially dangerous.

Common house spiders such as the American house spider and the cellar spider are found throughout the region, as well as the yellow sac spider and wolf spider. Black widow spiders, known for their venomous bites, are also found in North Georgia. In addition, brown recluse spiders, though less common in the area, have been reported. Knowing which species of spiders are present in your home or business is important for taking appropriate precautions and seeking professional spider removal services if necessary.

The most common kinds of spiders found in North Georgia

These are the most dangerous and venomous spiders to humans and pets:

  • Black Widows: Black widows are one of the most venomous spiders found in North Georgia. They have shiny black bodies and a distinctive red hourglass-shaped marking on their abdomen. Female black widows are larger than males and are known for their highly toxic venom. If you are bitten by a black widow, seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms of a black widow bite may include severe pain, muscle cramps, nausea, and sweating.
  • Brown Recluse Spiders: Brown recluse spiders are another venomous species found in North Georgia. They have a distinctive violin-shaped marking on their backs and range in color from light brown to dark brown. Brown recluse spiders are typically found in dark, quiet areas such as attics, closets, and crawl spaces. If you are bitten by a brown recluse spider, seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms of a brown recluse bite may include pain, itching, fever, and nausea.

These spiders are typically considered non-venomous to humans:

  • Wolf Spiders: Wolf spiders are a common species found throughout North Georgia. They are large, hairy spiders with distinctive eye patterns and are known for their speed and agility. While wolf spiders are not venomous, they can still deliver a painful bite if provoked. Wolf spiders are typically found in grassy areas, gardens, and wooded areas.
  • Orb-Weaver Spiders: Orb-weaver spiders are a common type of spider found throughout North Georgia. They are known for their intricate, circular webs and come in a variety of colors and patterns. Orb-weaver spiders are not typically venomous to humans and are considered beneficial because they help control insect populations.
  • Jumping Spiders: Jumping spiders are a unique type of spider found throughout North Georgia. They are small, agile spiders with distinctive eye patterns and are known for their ability to jump up to 50 times their body length. Jumping spiders are not typically venomous to humans and are considered beneficial because they help control insect populations.

Spiders can be frightening and even dangerous, but they also play an important role in controlling other pests. In these FAQs, we’ll answer some of the most common questions about spiders, including how to identify and safely remove them from your home.

What types of spiders are commonly found in Georgia?

Georgia is home to a diverse range of spider species, including some that are potentially dangerous to humans. Some of the most common spiders found in the state include black widows, brown recluse spiders, wolf spiders, and orb-weaver spiders. Black widows are recognizable by their black, shiny bodies with a distinctive red hourglass shape on their underside. Brown recluse spiders have a brownish body with a characteristic violin-shaped mark on their back. Wolf spiders are typically brown or gray with stripes or spots on their body, and orb-weaver spiders are known for their intricate, circular webs.

Are all spiders dangerous?

Not all spiders are dangerous to humans, and many species are actually beneficial to the environment by controlling other pest populations. However, some spider bites can cause serious health problems, particularly for children and the elderly. Symptoms of a spider bite can vary depending on the species, but may include pain, swelling, redness, and in severe cases, nausea, vomiting, or difficulty breathing.

Can I control spiders on my own?

While there are some DIY methods for controlling spiders, they are often ineffective and can even be dangerous if not used properly. Professional spider control services are the best way to ensure that your home is free from spiders. These services typically involve an initial inspection to identify the extent of the infestation, followed by the application of targeted treatments to eliminate the spiders and prevent them from returning.

How do you identify a spider infestation?

Signs of a spider infestation may include the presence of webs or egg sacs, as well as sightings of spiders themselves. We recommend having your home inspected for spiders at least once a year, particularly if you live in an area where spider infestations are common. Regular inspections can help to identify potential infestations early, before they have a chance to become established.

How can I prevent spiders from entering my home?

Preventing spider infestations requires a proactive approach. Some tips for preventing spider infestations include keeping your home clean and clutter-free, sealing up any cracks or gaps in your walls, and regularly vacuuming and dusting your home. Additionally, you can reduce the spider population around your home by eliminating their food sources, such as other insects. If you are concerned about a potential spider infestation in your home or business, contact a professional spider control service for a thorough inspection and targeted treatment plan.

How often should I have my home inspected for spiders?

We recommend having your home inspected for spiders at least once a year, particularly if you live in an area where spider infestations are common.

Are your spider control treatments safe for pets?

Our spider control treatments are safe for pets when used as directed. We use targeted treatments that are designed to eliminate spiders while minimizing any potential risks to people or pets. Results may vary depending on the extent of the infestation, but most clients see a noticeable improvement within a few days of treatment. Our treatments are safe and non-invasive, so you do not need to leave your home during spider control treatments.

How long does it take to see results from spider control treatments?

In many cases, spider control treatments will begin to take effect within a few hours of application. This may include a reduction in the number of spiders seen in and around your home, as well as a decrease in the number of spider webs or egg sacs.

However, it is important to note that spider control treatments may not eliminate all spiders immediately. Depending on the severity of the infestation, it may take several days or even weeks for all spiders to be eliminated. In addition, new spiders may enter your home or business from outside, particularly if there are cracks or gaps in your walls or doors.

Do I need to leave my home during spider control treatments?

While it is generally safe to remain in your home during spider control treatments, it is important to follow any instructions or recommendations provided by the pest control technician. This may include avoiding contact with treated areas for a period of time, or taking steps to minimize any potential exposure to the treatment, such as covering food or water dishes for pets.

If you have any concerns about the safety of spider control treatments or if you have specific health or safety concerns, it is important to discuss these with the pest control technician before treatment begins. They can provide you with detailed information about the products and treatments they will be using, as well as any precautions you should take to ensure the safety of yourself and your pets.

Great experience! Mark is knowledgeable and fair. Very communicative! I knew exactly when his guys were coming and about what time. Benji and DJ did a great job of addressing all the areas of my home where I had gaps that were allowing squirrels into my attic. They were pleasant, efficient and accommodating. Strongly recommend this company.

Called Holders to remove an unknown critter from my house. Benji came out to do my inspection. He was personable, answered all my questions, and gave me a fair price for sealing my house and removal of the pest. He and DJ came back to do the work a couple days later. They were quick and thorough and sensitive to the fact that I had a sleeping newborn. Highly recommend.

Ricky and DJ with Holders Pest & Wildlife services performed our routine service today 9/2022. They were professional, courteous, attentive and appeared to be a good team. Ricky listened and addressed any of my concerns. I can't leave out Felicia, the receptionist, she is phenomenal! She's professional, understanding and willing to work with our schedule so that it's convenient on both sides. She's a keeper & we're grateful for her. Holders Pest & Wildlife has serviced our home for over 3 yrs and have remedied issues from mice, mites, stick bugs, antsand spiders. Being backed up to woods and a creek, we encounter a variety of creatures from time to time. I must add, although there's been a few staff changes over this time period, they still managed to provide good service each visit. Thank you for respecting our request of wearing your facial mask and shoe covers every visit! 🙂

We had a rodent problem and we chose Holder’s to do the job over our current brand name exterminator. I had a fantastic experience from the moment I called their number. The lady who took the call was very sweet and knowledgeable about the many questions I asked. Then she connected me directly with the technician, Benji, who would be coming out for the inspection. He too was so sweet and accommodating to our needs.I thought his initial inspection was done in a very professional manner. The quote and his explanation of the costs were straightforward and at no point, did he try to upsell me. The job was done in a few hours and cleanup was also done well. Benji also does a great job following up and keeping me informed. It’s definitely pricey but very much worth it to have peace of mind. It will save you from other more costly issues in the future. So far haven’t had any issues since they left.? I really liked the hands-on approach and general vibe of this company. There’s something personal about their touch that you don’t get from larger brand name companies.
